ST. GEORGE — This week’s new moon signals brave new beginnings.

The new moon will be exact on Sunday, Aug. 4, at 5:12 a.m. MDT at 12 degrees in Leo. As with all new moons, this dark night precedes the beginning of a new two-week cycle. Seeds planted now and nurtured are likely to culminate six months from now when a full moon in Leo illuminates the sky.

But this isn’t your ordinary new moon.

Come night, at 10:56 p.m., Mercury will turn retrograde in the sign of Virgo and slowly move back into the sign of Leo. Mercury will remain in retrograde until Aug. 28.

It may be that whatever we start now has huge aims, and Mercury retrograde pulls our focus to refining the details, especially as Mercury retrogrades into Leo, which will emphasize the same part of life activated by the new moon, depending on your sign.

In the fixed fire sign Leo, this new moon influences us to bring more romance, passion and creativity into the area of life it impacts for each sign.

Leo tells us to take a risk, and Mercury retrograde tells us to slow down. While these may seem like contradictory energies, this combo can actually benefit us by helping us be more strategic.

Leo is the sign that rules the heart. It teaches us to take pride in our unique contributions and boldly step onto the world stage to express ourselves exactly as we are. This energy stirs the child within us, reminding us of the joys of exploration and play.

If you’re a creative person, this new moon can be a time when you find yourself in the flow and even surprise yourself with the ending result — but this is not about the outcome! Leo energy invites us to break free from conforming to outside expectations and tap into our individual voice.

This lunation harmonizes with passionate Mars and lucky Jupiter as these planets approach alignment in the sign of Gemini. We’re enterprising and confident.

So what does all of this mean for you? Find out below.

Aries

It’s time to express yourself, dear Aries. With this new moon lighting up your fifth house of self-expression, children and romance, it’s time to take a leap of faith. It may be time to peel back another layer of yourself for others to see. And with this lunar energy working in harmony with Mars and Jupiter in your house of communication, you are being given an energetic push to speak your truth. This is a particularly passionate two-week cycle when your heart’s desires take center focus. And with Mercury retrograding this same part of your sky, you’ll be reviewing what it is that truly makes you happy.

Taurus
April 20-May 20

It’s time to listen to your gut, dear Taurus. With this new moon highlighting matters of home and family, your sense of inner security becomes a priority over the next two weeks. You’re more reflective now, and it could be that you come up with a plan to grow your income and begin to take the steps toward a more prosperous future now, as Mars and Jupiter move toward a conjunction in your second house of money and self-worth. Home renovations could be in store for some, which could unfold over the next month during Mercury’s retrograde season. The chance of running into people from the past is heightened now.

Gemini
May 21–June 20

Is there something you’ve been wanting to learn? If so, it may be now that you take a leap forward, dear Gemini. A new moon in your third house signals an uptick in daily activity. There are calls to make, people to see and places to go, and you could find yourself swept into a whirlwind of conversations that have the potential to change your perspective. And with Jupiter and Mars in your sign close together in the sky, you may be breaking out of the shell of an old self, and now is the time to acquire or refine the skills you need to align with who you are becoming. Pay close attention to your words and the messages you are sending, as Mercury will be retrograding into this same part of your sky, increasing the likelihood of miscommunications.

Cancer
June 21–July 22

It’s time to think about your prosperity and how you value yourself as a person, dear Cancer, as this new moon calls attention to your sector of values. Financial matters may require you to make some adjustments, such as creating a budget or asking for a raise. And with your ruler, the moon, making a harmonious aspect to Mars and Jupiter in your 12th house, you could see a breakthrough now, especially in terms of subconscious patterns that are hindering your growth. For some, this could bring about an ending or provide closure that powerfully changes the way you see yourself. Mercury’s retrograde will also course through your sector of self-worth. Try to carve some time out for a little more self-care — you deserve it!

Leo
July 23–August 22

This is your new moon, dear Leo, which means it’s time to think about your goals for the next year. Since a new moon only happens once a year, this is considered your personal New Year. It’s to reinvent yourself in some way, which may mean switching up your personal style or expressing yourself in a new way. These changes could relate to your social circle, and it’s likely that friendships will feel energetically recharged. As Mercury retrogrades back into your sign this month, your gaze will turn further inward.

Virgo
Aug. 23–Sept. 22

It’s time to take a break, dear Virgo. A new moon in the 12th house tends to bring up conflicting energies. On one hand, you feel pushed toward new beginnings, but on the other, you feel a need to retreat. This is because the 12th house is the last house in the Zodiac, which signifies the ending of a cycle. It’s time to take an honest stock of your life and let go of what no longer serves you. This can be difficult for many because attachments are hard to break. For some, this could relate to long-term goals, as Mars and Jupiter bring a passionate boost to your career sector. And with your ruler turning retrograde, pay close attention to what your subconscious may be trying to show you.

Libra
Sept. 23–Oct. 22

This new moon is all about connection for you, dear Libra. It’s time to put yourself out there and find like-minded people, as this new moon sparks new beginnings in your 11th house of friendship and future dreams. A friend made now could figure prominently in your future. Perhaps you could join forces for a collaboration. With Mars and Jupiter speaking harmoniously with this new moon in your ninth house, this really is a time to be bold and step outside your comfort zone. Your hunger for adventure could feel somewhat insatiable, so do find time to do something that gets your blood pumping. Mercury’s retrograde will have you reflecting on your inner circle.

Scorpio
Oct. 23–Nov. 21

This new moon is happening at the very top of your sky, highlighting your sector of goals, career and reputation, dear Scorpio. Your responsibilities could increase over the next two weeks, and it’s a good time to reassess your long-term goals and assess what next step needs to be taken. For some, this could be a time when you start a new career track. And with the influence of Mars and Jupiter in your eighth house, expect opportunities for self-mastery and transformation to figure strongly over the next month. Mercury’s retrograde will shift your focus even further to the future, calling you to reflect on your dreams.

Sagittarius
Nov. 22–Dec. 21

It’s time to break free from the daily rhythm and feed your spirit of adventure, dear Sagittarius, as this new moon falls in your ninth house, seeking to expand your philosophical outlook of the world at large. Some could be returning to school, embarking on a journey or dealing with a legal matter. And with your ruler Jupiter in your sector of relationships making a harmonious connection to this new moon, you may meet someone now who becomes a significant part of your life, such as a mentor. If played out romantically, it’s likely the person of interest will be different from what your norm. Mercury’s retrograde signals a time when you could experience a profound shift in perspective.

Capricorn
Dec. 22–Jan. 19

A new moon in the eighth house is deeply transformative and could have you feeling more sensitive than normal, dear Capricorn. This is because you have a heightened sense of awareness about the internal motivations of others now and may need to lean on external resources for support. It’s a great time to map out a financial plan, research ways to invest and seek renewals in intimate relationships. Alongside this, the moon’s connection to Jupiter and Mars inspires you to rejuvenate your daily routine and pour more energy into matters of health and work. This Mercury retrograde can be a powerful time for healing.

Aquarius
Jan. 20–Feb. 18

With this new moon falling in your partnership sector, new beginnings and renewals in relationships are on offer for you, dear Aquarius. Your powers of diplomacy and negotiation are heightened, opening opportunities to restore or strengthen existing bonds. If you feel like you are lacking support from others, it may be necessary to look within and consider how you are showing up for others. But with the moon’s fortuitous link with Mars and Jupiter in your fifth house of self-expression and joy, it could be that the answer lies in assessing what truly makes you happy and focusing on how to reawaken a more light-hearted, playful connection with those you consider close. Mercury’s retrograde offers further insight into your bonds with others.

Pisces
Feb. 19 – March 20

It’s time to initiate health habits and kick bad ones, dear Pisces, as this new moon shifts your focus to your daily routine. You may decide to start a new self-care routine, clean up your diet or establish a more satisfying work environment. It’s easier now to focus on the details of daily life, and as you do this, you pour more passion into your sense of security and emotional well-being, especially with the moon’s link to Jupiter and Mars in your sector of home and family. Part of this could have to do with creating a more efficient work-life balance that allows you a greater sense of comfort. Mercury’s retrograde signals a time when you could be reassessing how well you are caring for yourself.
