CEDAR CITY — A driver involved in a single-vehicle rollover near the top of Cedar Canyon on Wednesday night was traveling an estimated 80 mph in a 40 mph zone, police said.

The incident, which was reported shortly after 9 p.m., involved a 2006 Pontiac G6 passenger car with a 20-year-old female driver as its only occupant.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Bambi Baie said the car had been heading westbound on state Route 14 near mile marker 17 when its driver lost control, causing it to roll.

The car came to a stop upside down, partially blocking one of the travel lanes.

Baie said although the initial call had reported a possible fire, there was no fire at the scene when responding troopers arrived.

The driver, who had been wearing a seat belt, was not injured and declined medical transport, Baie added.

In addition to Utah Highway Patrol troopers and Gold Cross Ambulance personnel, officers from Iron County Sheriff’s Office and Utah Division of Wildlife Resources also responded and assisted in clearing the scene and managing traffic.

The driver reportedly told troopers at the scene that she was going 80 mph — double the posted speed limit.

The crash occurred shortly after the driver had started heading down the canyon, with the car coming to rest near a sign that warns of a steep road grade of 4-8%, just before the Zion Overlook Point.

This report is based on information provided by law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.
