CEDAR CITY — A suspected drowsy driver left the roadway, causing a single-vehicle rollover crash on state Route 14 in Cedar Canyon on Tuesday morning.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Bambi Baie told Cedar City News that the man, who is in his 20s, was driving a Chevrolet Malibu westbound down the canyon near mile marker 10 just after 7:40 a.m. when the vehicle went off the right side of the road and down an embankment.

The car ended up on its side in the river bed, a photo provided by Utah Highway Patrol shows.

The driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was able to exit on his own and was not injured in the crash.

Baie said driver fatigue is believed to be the cause of the crash. She noted that the man had been wearing his seat belt, “which is what saved him from serious injury.”

In addition to Utah Highway Patrol, personnel from Iron County Sheriff’s Office, Cedar City Fire Department and Southern Utah University Police also responded to the incident.

There was no impact to SR-14 traffic since the car was some distance from the roadway, Baie added. The vehicle was later towed from the scene.

This report is based on preliminary statements from law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.
