CEDAR CITY — A pickup truck driver ran a red light and crashed into the side of a minivan in Cedar City on Thursday afternoon, police said.

The incident reportedly occurred shortly after 3 p.m. at the intersection of state Route 56 and Cross Hollow Road. It involved a white Chevrolet pickup truck and a silver Toyota Sienna.

Cedar City Police Sgt. Tim Bonzo said the driver of the Toyota was heading north on Cross Hollow Road when she entered the intersection on a green light, according to at least two witnesses.

“The pickup truck was traveling eastbound toward Cedar when it went right through a red light without hitting the brakes and struck the rear driver’s side of the Toyota,” Bonzo said.

Only minor injuries were reported.

Bonzo said two young children were buckled in their car seats in the middle seat of the van, just inches from where the impact occurred. Both of the children, along with another young passenger in the front seat plus the van’s driver, were evaluated at the scene by Gold Cross Ambulance personnel as a precaution.

The male driver of the Chevrolet pickup received a citation for running the red light, Bonzo added.

The truck, which appeared to be a utility work truck that bore Montana license plates, sustained moderate to serious front-end damage that appeared to render it inoperable.

Meanwhile, the Toyota minivan sustained significantly heavy back-end damage and required a tow truck to leave the scene.

Traffic impact was minimal and both drivers were able to bring their vehicles to a stop off to the side of the roadway. In addition to multiple Cedar City Police Department officers, an Iron County Sheriff’s deputy also responded to the incident.

This report is based on preliminary statements from law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.
