CEDAR CITY — The driver of a pickup truck was cited following a rear-end collision at a railroad crossing in Cedar City on Friday afternoon.

The incident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. and involved a dark green Chevrolet pickup truck pulling a small utility trailer and a red semitractor-trailer pulling double fuel tanks.

Cedar City Police Sgt. Justin Ludlow said both vehicles were heading westbound on state Route 56 near 2400 West when the semi driver stopped at the railroad tracks, as is required by Utah law. The pickup driver then crashed into the back of the semi’s rear trailer.

No injuries were reported.

The man driving the pickup received a citation for following too closely, Ludlow said.

“Drivers need to be extra careful at railroad crossings because certain vehicles are required to stop,” Ludlow added.

The pickup truck sustained significant front-end damage and was later towed from the scene. In contrast, the damage to the semi’s trailer appeared to be merely superficial.

In addition to multiple Cedar City Police officers, a Utah Highway Patrol trooper also responded, as did Cedar City Fire Chief Mike Phillips, who happened to be driving by in the opposite direction just as the crash happened.

Traffic was minimally impacted for about 30 minutes due to the temporary closure of the right westbound lane.

This report is based on preliminary statements from law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.
