PAROWAN — Two people were taken to the hospital as a precaution following a single-vehicle rollover on Interstate 15 in Iron County on Sunday afternoon.

The incident, which occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m., involved a brown Honda CRV with two occupants.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Scott Mackelprang said the vehicle had been heading northbound on I-15 near mile marker 76, one mile north of Exit 75 in Parowan.

“It sounds like they encountered standing water due to a thunderstorm in the area,” Mackelprang told Cedar City News. “They lost control, began to slide, overcorrected and went off the road.”

The vehicle came to rest upside down next to a wire fence some distance from the roadway.

Both of the SUV’s occupants were transported a local medical facility to be evaluated, Mackelprang said, adding that their injuries were not believed to be serious or life-threatening.

Both the driver and the passenger had been wearing their seat belts, Mackelprang noted.

“We’re kind of coming into our monsoon season, when these types of localized heavy rainstorms become somewhat common,” he added. “Motorists should pay attention as they’re driving, and if they see what looks like could be an approaching storm, use caution and reduce their speed, sooner rather than later.”

Added Mackelprang: “Don’t stay at 80 miles an hour until you hit standing water on the road and then decide to slow down. If you can do so as you’re approaching possible weather as a precaution, it might help get you from point A to point B a little bit safer.”

Assisting the Utah Highway Patrol at the scene was one Utah Division of Natural Resources officer, while two Iron County Sheriff’s deputies helped to warn approaching traffic.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.
