The incident, which was reported shortly after 11 a.m., occurred at the southern end of Westview Drive, just north of where that road intersects with the Hamilton Fort frontage road (Old Highway 91). It involved a red GMC Jimmy SUV with a juvenile male driver as its only occupant.

“The driver was going south on Westview when he fell asleep,” Iron County Sheriff’s Lt. Humphries told Cedar City News. “He went off the road, which startled him and he overcorrected.”

The vehicle rolled at least once before coming to rest upright and alongside a fence on the west side of the roadway.

The teen, who had reportedly been wearing his seat belt, sustained only minor injuries. He was evaluated by Gold Cross Ambulance personnel at the scene but was not transported to the hospital.

Meanwhile, the vehicle sustained heavy damage and needed to be towed.

Cedar City Fire Department personnel assisted with the cleanup of the scene, including sweeping up broken glass and other debris from the roadway.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.
