PAROWAN — A single-vehicle crash knocked out power to hundreds of customers in Parowan late Thursday morning, authorities said.

The incident, which was reported at 11:41 a.m., involved a white Dodge Ram pickup truck belonging to a local electrical contractor.

Parowan Police Chief Addison Adams said the truck was heading westbound along 200 South when, for reasons yet unknown, the driver swerved off the roadway to the left, on the south side of the street, struck a power pole and then crashed through a cinder-block wall before being stopped by a large pine tree.

The truck’s journey ended just to the north of the Foothills HOA clubhouse, near the mobile home community’s front entrance.

As of 2:30 p.m., Parowan City Power crews are working on repairing the damaged pole and power lines so that electrical service can be restored.

Parowan City Manager Dan Jessen said all residents who live in the Foothills HOA had their electricity shut off immediately after the incident.

“It’s affecting some of the surrounding neighborhoods as well,” Jessen told Cedar City News shortly after 2:30 p.m.

Jessen said the power within the Foothills community is expected to be out for at least several more hours, until around 8 or 9 p.m.

In other affected areas, he said, the electricity has either already been restored, within two to three hours of the crash, or is expected to be back on soon thereafter.

Despite the heavy front-end damage to the vehicle, the driver sustained only minor injuries, Adams said, adding that the man was taken via a coworker’s private vehicle to a local medical facility for evaluation.

Adams said driver impairment is not suspected, but added that the cause of the crash is still under investigation.

This report is based on preliminary statements from law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.

This is a developing story.

Updated Aug. 3, 4:30 p.m. Jessen said that as of 4:30 p.m., power has been restored to all other affected Parowan customers except for those living in the Foothills HOA community.
