Region 10 girls golf: Pine View maintains win streak but Cedar also steadily improving

ST. GEORGE — The Region 10 leading Pine View girls golf team shot a season-best 18-hole score of 349 on Thursday at SunRiver.

The Panthers, who had scored 350 last week at Sky Mountain, stayed 10 strokes ahead of the runner-up Cedar Reds, which also improved from last week by a single stroke.

Leading the way for Pine View was Hallie Wieland, who shot an 81. Her younger sister Mattie Wieland along with teammate Alyssa Butterfus each shot an 88, while Kenzi Owen had a score of 92.

Coming in third place was Crimson Cliffs with 373 strokes. The Mustangs were once again led by top individual medalist Kate Walker, who shot a 75.

Cedar head coach Laycee Johnson, whose daughter RaeLee is one of the Reds’ top golfers, said she “couldn’t be happier” with her team’s progress this season. The Reds have cut more than 40 strokes off of last year’s team average, the coach noted.

“We have eight solid players who get better every week,” Johnson told St. George News. “No matter which six we take (to the region match), any one of them can be our No. 1 for our team.”

Cedar’s top four golfers on Thursday all came in within seven strokes of each other. Denym Bohn led the way with 87, with Taylyn Wilson scoring 88, RaeLee Johnson 90 and Breelie Evans 94.

Cedar will host next week’s match, scheduled for Wednesday, April 26 at Cedar Ridge Golf Course.
