ST. GEORGE — The high school girls golf teams of Region 10 braved the elements on Thursday to complete an 18-hole match for the first time this season.
“It was a brutally rough day out there,” said Pine View coach Matt Wieland. “We saw rain, wind and even snow for a few minutes. All the girls stayed positive and persevered through it.”
Pine View’s top four golfers posted a collective score of 373 to take the top spot for the second week in a row. Hallie Wieland’s 83 led the Panthers, while teammate Alyssa Butterfus carded an 85.
The top individual golfer was Crimson Cliffs freshman Kate Walker, who shot an 81, including an eagle on the par-5 second hole on The Pointe course at Sunbrook Golf Club. The athletes also played the nine holes of the Black Rock course.
Led by Walker, the Mustangs posted a team score of 400 to place second. Finishing a close third were the Cedar Reds (403), and fourth went to the Desert Hills Thunder (437), who were paced by Rylee Payne’s 83.
“Given the conditions, Kate’s, Hallie’s and Rylee’s scores were awfully impressive,” coach Wieland added. “I could barely feel my fingers and I was in a covered cart.”
Wieland also gave a shout-out to Dixie High School for doing a great job of hosting the match.
“Their AD Mike Bair was even driving around handing out hand warmers to the players at one point,” Wieland said.
“At the end of the day, it was great to finally record a full 18-hole match. Hopefully, the sun is shining next week.”
Next week’s match is scheduled for Wednesday, April 5, at Green Spring Golf Course in Washington City.
