ST. GEORGE — The Pine View Panthers won Region 10’s fourth golf match of the season on Wednesday.
Led by Alyssa Butterfus’ score of 80, the Panthers saw all four of their top scorers shoot 94 or better for a total team score of 94. Runner-up Crimson Cliffs finished with 384 strokes, while third-place Cedar was right behind at 387.
The match was played at Green Spring Golf Course in Washington City under clear but chilly weather conditions.
Although each of the seven Region 10 schools finished in the same order as they did last week, the team scores were an average of 28 strokes better. Pine View was 18 strokes lower than last week, while Crimson Cliffs and Cedar each improved by 16 strokes. Hurricane saw the biggest cut, with 56 strokes.
Pine View head coach Matt Wieland said that last year, the Green Spring match was the only Region 10 tournament the Panthers did not win.
“So, we’ve had today circled on the calendar for a while,” he told St. George News. “We also celebrated our three seniors, since we hosted this tournament, so it felt good to cap it off with a win.”
The overall individual winner on Wednesday was Desert Hills senior Rylee Payne, who shot a 79 to edge Butterfus by a single stroke.
“Rylee Payne is hands down one of the most-liked girls in the entire region, so everyone there was thrilled to see her get a win,” Wieland said, adding that the golfers and coaches gathered in the room inside the clubhouse erupted into cheers when Payne was announced as the top medalist.
Wieland also commented on Pine View junior Butterfus’ strong finish.
“Alyssa was having a rough day, so I challenged her to take a fresh start mentality and play the final five holes at even par,” Wieland said. “She took it a step further and played those holes 2-under par. I was proud of the way she hung in there.”
Coming in third place individually was Crimson Cliffs freshman Kate Walker, who shot an 81.
Next week’s match is scheduled for Wednesday, April 12, at Sky Mountain Golf Course in Hurricane.
