SPRINGDALE — The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for eastern Washington County and Zion National Park regions for Sunday evening.
Both urban and small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall are expected, the weather forecast alert stated.
Minor flooding in low-lying areas around Springdale and Zion National Parkand is expected, along with poor drainage in areas and the possibility of water running over certain roadways.
“Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms,” the National Weather Service alert said. “This is causing urban and small stream flooding, as observed on SR-9 in Springdale near Quail Ridge Road.”
Between .5 and 1.5 inches of rain have been reported, as of 5:24 p.m. The weather service warns those driving to remain alert for the unexpected.
“Turn around, don’t drown,” the alert said. “When encountering flooded roads, most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
It is important to know where you are relative to streams, rivers, or creeks which can become deadly in heavy rain. Campers and hikers should avoid streams, creeks and slot canyons.
Additionally, those going outdoors should tell someone where they are going and when they plan to return, according to Utah State Parks.
