Legacy Village of St. George encourages community to take part in acts-of-kindness challenge

CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — Legacy Village of St. George is spreading love by practicing 10 acts of kindness a day for 30 days. And they want to encourage the community to join the movement.

Legacy Village of St. George is one of 19 retirement communities under Western States Lodging and Management, and all 119 of the company’s employees are participating in the 10×30 Kindness Challenge.

“Basically, with those 19 communities, that recognizes over 1.5 million acts of kindness in just 30 days,” said Jason Erickson, executive director of the St. George community. “That’s huge.”

The company kicked off the 30-day endeavor on Nov. 13, a date designated as National Kindness Day. They participated in a humanitarian project that involved filling backpacks with supplies for refugees.

While the company knows their employees do acts of kindness for their residents every day, Erickson said keeping track of each one not only feels good but creates a desire to do even more. Due to the staggering statistic that 55% of seniors are lonely during the holidays, every extra act of kindness goes a long way.

“More than anything, it’s trying to be positive and look at the bright side of things,” he said. “And look out for not only our residents but our employees. It’s been a really cool thing to see.”

Inside Legacy Village, Erickson said they have a scale to measure the acts of kindness, which includes a wall covered in acts being fulfilled.

The staff has voiced that the project makes a significant difference in their day-to-day jobs and overall well-being. It has also changed the relationship between the staff and the residents. And the residents are noticing.

“I’ve had all kinds of residents come to me and express gratitude for the service that they’re getting in our dining room, for example,” Erickson said. “The extra care they’re getting, the additional, above and beyond, going the extra mile.”

Alongside the 10×30 Kindness Challenge, the company has added “personal touch” stories. These stories are geared toward residents who may have limited support or lack of family in the area.

“It could be sitting down and having a conversation,” he said. “Finding out what their favorite treat is, getting something from the kitchen, or ordering a favorite gift.”

But that’s not all.

Legacy Village also has a Giving Tree. Items purchased from the tree go directly to refugees. The Giving Tree is open to both residents and employees.

“We want to create a positive environment, a positive culture, not only with our residents but it filters into everyone in the building,” Erickson said.

Join the kindness challenge and complete 10 small acts of kindness every day for 30 days. Share your acts of kindness by using the hashtag #10x30kindnesschallenge on social media. While the challenge runs from Nov. 13 to Dec. 13, there’s never an expiration date for spreading kindness.
