2-vehicle collision shuts down Sunset Boulevard in St. George

ST. GEORGE — A child’s toy that fell out of the back of a pickup truck allegedly caused a two-car collision on Sunset Boulevard, resulting in a shutdown of the westbound lanes on Saturday afternoon.

St. George Police Officer Bryan Hendrix said a brown Dodge Ram 2500 was traveling westbound with a full truckload of miscellaneous items.

A child’s plastic outdoor play set fell out of the back of the truck, causing the driver of the silver Honda Civic to brake. The silver Ford F-150 pulling a silver enclosed trailer behind the Civic slammed on its brakes, colliding with the rear of the Civic.

The collision caused the Civic to spin and travel up on the sidewalk, while the F-150 traveled left, leaving skid marks over 40 feet into the median.

Hendrix said it was about 11:45 a.m. when they were dispatched to the scene in front of Express Chicken Greek Restaurant.

There were two adults and three children in the Ram, a man in the Civic and two men in the F-150.

The elderly man in the Civic had minor injuries and was transported to St. George Regional Hospital. The younger adult passenger in the F-150 was transported with breathing problems to the same medical facility. Both transports were provided by two Gold Cross Ambulance units.

Hendrix said the woman in the Ram was cited for an unsecured load causing a collision, while the man driving the F-150 was cited for following too close.

“Make sure all your loads are fully secure,” Hendrix said. “Leave enough room when following other vehicles in case someone slams on their brakes.”

The lanes were fully closed for almost an hour and reopened at about 12:55 p.m. St. George Police, St. George Fire Department, St. George Animal Control and Gold Cross Ambulance responded and assisted.

Red Rock Collison Repair and Matrixx Towing towed both vehicles from the scene.

This report is based on statements from police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
