ST. GEORGE — Celeste Maloy and Kathleen Riebe, the Republican and Democrat candidates running for Utah’s 2nd Congressional District, will be featured at Utah Tech University this Tuesday, Nov. 7, at a candidate forum.
The forum will be at the MK Cox Auditorium on the university campus and will begin a 6:30 p.m. It will be moderated by Vince Brown, chair of the Washington County Debate Coalition.
Before the congressional candidate forum, a meet-and-greet will be held from 5-6:15 p.m. in the same location and feature Republican primary candidates who seek to replace Sen. Mitt Romney who announced in September that he will not be seeking a second term.
So far, Utah Republicans who have announced their intent to be Romney’s replacement include former Utah House Speaker Brad Wilson, Riverton City Mayor Trent Staggs, Josh Randall, Tyrone Jensen, Carolyn Phippen, Gabriel Lobo-Blanco and Rob Bird.
As the event is set up in a forum format, Brown will conduct one-on-one conversations with each candidate about the issues that matter to the residents of Southern Utah. He also will solicit questions from the public.
Maloy and Riebe are among the candidates in a special election to replace former Republican Congressman Chris Stewart, who left office Sept. 15.
Stewart announced his resignation from office earlier this year, citing undisclosed health concerns related to his wife as the reason. This prompted the Utah Governor’s Office and Legislature to reschedule the dates of the state’s primary and general election to accommodate a special election for Utah’s 2nd Congressional District.
Maloy previously worked in Stewart’s office as legal counsel. Prior to that she was an assistant Washington County attorney and served in the leadership of the Washington County Republican Party. Riebe is a state senator who entered office in 2019 and is employed as a public school teacher outside the Legislature.
Tuesday’s forum will also be live-streamed on the Institute of Politics’ YouTube channel.
Maloy and Riebe aren’t the only ones running for Congress as the race includes third-party and independent candidates. Among them are Cedar City resident Brad Green of the Libertarian Party, January Walker of the United Utah Party, Cassie Easley of the Constitution Party and independents Perry Myers and Joe Buchman.
The general election is set for Nov. 21.
