CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — Valley Women’s Health has been serving local patients for over 30 years, providing essential care for medical needs from adolescence through menopause and beyond. Recognizing that options for women’s health services in the community are limited even as the area’s population continues to expand, they recently welcomed a new OB/GYN to their team.

“Due to the growth of St. George, we’re seeing a need for more OB/GYN services,” practice administrator Quin Monson said. “It was a very easy decision to bring another doctor to our office.”

The newest addition to Valley Women’s Health is Dr. Todd Jarvis, who started accepting patients on July 1. Originally from Beaver, Jarvis attended Brigham Young University and earned his medical degree from the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth. After completing residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at Methodist Dallas Medical Center earlier this year, he eagerly accepted the opportunity to return to his native Southern Utah.

“Ultimately, it was the people that brought me to Valley Women’s Health,” he said. “The biggest draw for me was their emphasis on taking care of patients and creating an enjoyable environment to work in.”

Jarvis, who has been married for 10 years and has three daughters, chose to specialize in obstetrics and gynecology because he loves having the opportunity to witness joyful moments in people’s lives. He also enjoys working with his hands to perform procedures with the technology that’s shaping the future of medicine.

“When I did this rotation in medical school, delivering babies, I absolutely fell in love with it,” he said. “In medicine, we often think of fixing an ailment or saving someone, but OB/GYN focuses on bringing life into the world rather than trying to stop it from leaving.”

Unlike many OB/GYN providers in the area, Jarvis has received extensive training in robot-assisted surgery. Robotic surgery offers a distinct advantage over traditional laparoscopic surgery, and this unique skill set allows him to perform minimally invasive hysterectomies and other gynecologic procedures even in complex cases.

During robotic surgery, cutting-edge technology enables the provider to rotate an instrument 360 degrees for improved access. Surgeons can now perform complicated procedures, such as the removal of a large uterus or the dissection of an area enveloped in scar tissue, without requiring a sizable abdominal incision. Minimally invasive surgery translates to less time in the hospital and easier recovery for patients.

“It was just a perfect fit to have him come in,” Monson said. “He can do some things that we haven’t been able to offer in the past. We’re now set up to continue providing great health care for the women of Southern Utah.”

Valley Women’s Health offers a complete spectrum of gynecological services, including annual exams and pap smears, premarital exams, birth control and IUDs, STD screenings, family planning education, cancer screenings and hormone replacement therapy. Additionally, the clinic partners with Intermountain St. George Regional Hospital to perform surgical procedures including hysteroscopies, hysterectomies, tubal ligations, urogynecological repair and vaginal wall repair.

Obstetric services include 3D and 4D ultrasounds, high-risk prenatal care, prenatal education, labor and delivery, postpartum care and breastfeeding support. Valley Women’s Health also assists with the diagnosis and management of urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, endometriosis, pre-menstrual syndrome, irregular menstruation, lack of menstruation and other health conditions affecting women throughout every stage of life.

“What sets us apart is our team approach,” Jarvis said. “We have such a large group of physicians that we can collaborate if we encounter an issue that one of us doesn’t necessarily have experience in. It gives us the ability to really provide exceptional care to our patients.”
