ST. GEORGE — Residents in Southern Utah, especially those along the Interstate 15 corridor, are under a flood advisory.
The National Weather Service issued a warning at 6 p.m. that minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas is possible as a result of heavy rains in the area. The weather service had issued a special weather statement Monday afternoon as a strong, north-moving thunderstorm was approaching. That warning expired at 6 p.m., and the current advisory is in effect until 8 p.m.
According to the advisory, “Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the advisory area. Between 0.5 and 0.75 inches of rain have fallen. Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas and water over roadways” is likely.
Specific locations included in the advisory are St George, Santa Clara, Ivins and Snow Canyon State Park.
The weather service also reminds travelers of the following: “Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads.”
