CEDAR CITY — For nearly 100 years, members of the Cedar City Rotary Club have been serving residents living in the Iron County community.

From building the Veterans Memorial Park, cleaning graffiti from overpasses and volunteering at local nonprofits, the club’s services have been vast and varied since 1925.

Currently with 115 members, Rotarians come from private businesses, education, construction, healthcare, government and nonprofits, among many other fields — all rallying around the shared motto “Service Above Self.”

The Cedar City Rotary Club regularly donates to charitable causes in Iron County and beyond. They fund these donations through both contributions from members and with annual fundraisers.

An annual golf tournament, held in May, and the July Jamboree — the club’s largest fundraiser — give the community a chance to donate to the Rotary Club’s mission as well. One hundred percent of the funds raised from the two events is used for charitable giving; none is used for club operations, said Club President Tessa Douglas in a press release.

“Because of the incredible support the community has shown the club, they have raised nearly $500,000 dollars over the last few years and have been able to provide meaningful financial support to a number of worthy causes,” Douglas stated.

Currently, the Cedar City Rotary Club, Cedar City RAP Tax and Cedar City Motors are on a mission to transform the Canyon Park into Cedar City’s first water park.

“Now is the time for us to help the children in the community in another way — with homegrown, hometown water features in the beautiful Canyon Park,” according to the Cedar City Rotary Club website.

Past organizations and projects Rotarians have contributed to include Canyon Creek Services, Iron County Care & Share, Cedar City Hospital, SUU scholarships for Iron County students, maintaining and upgrading the Rotary Centennial Veterans Park, Happy Factory, Boys and Girls State, Southwest Livestock Show, SUU Athletics, Southwest Technical College scholarships, retrofitting a new Iron County School District pantry and annually funding the Fiddler’s Elementary School mobile pantry.

Rotary International, the club’s parent organization, brings together a global network of volunteer leaders dedicated to tackling the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. They connect 1.4 million members from more than 35,000 Rotary clubs in almost every country in the world.

Together, they work together to promote peace, fight disease and provide clean water, sanitation and hygiene. Locally, Rotarians work to support education and grow local economies, along with community service projects.
