Police: St. George auto dealership shuttle hit by a red-light running SUV

ST. GEORGE — A shuttle minivan vehicle from the Stephen Wade auto dealerships was hit by a sports utility vehicle that police said ran a red light at the corner of Auto Mall Drive and Black Ridge Drive on Friday morning.

The crash, which occurred in front of Stephen Wade Nissan, took place around 10 a.m. While a Gold Cross Ambulance came to the scene after initial reports of an injury, no injuries reported necessitated a transport to the hospital. There was minimal disruption to traffic.

St. George Police Officer Jeremy Needles told St. George News the crash happened when a Hyundai Tuscon SUV with a female driver and sole occupant was going east on Auto Mall Drive as the Chrysler Pacifica shuttle with the male Wade employee but no passengers was crossing north through a green light on Black Ridge Drive.

“She came to the intersection, the light turned red. She ran the red light and t-boned the car,” Needles said, adding seat belts worn by both drivers kept the injuries minimal.

The SUV driver was cited, he added.

Bill Schmidt, the driver for the Stephen Wade dealerships, said the crash felt sudden.

“It’s one thing if you see someone coming. It’s another if — wham,” Schmidt said, making a motion with his arms.

Nearby employees at the Nissan dealership came to check on Phillips, including Erin Sanchez who also comforted the driver of the SUV.

“She was following GPS and she just kind of missed the light, so she’s shook up,” Sanchez said.

This report is based on information provided by law enforcement and may not contain the full scope of findings.
