3-vehicle crash clogs Sunset Boulevard in St. George

ST. GEORGE — A three-vehicle collision at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Westridge Drive stopped eastbound traffic on the upper St. George thoroughfare for nearly an hour Monday afternoon. The crash, which police preliminarily blamed on a car running the red light, injured one person.

At approximately 3:10 p.m., two pickups and a white sedan sat in the intersection as St. George Police closed down traffic on eastbound Sunset Boulevard for half a block from the intersection to the AutoZone. From there, traffic was diverted through the nearby Maverik parking lot.

The St. George Fire Department handled the cleanup, with the newly paved road marked by absorbent and skid marks.

According to St. George Police Officer David Blackman, the white Ford Taurus driven by a lone teen girl ran the red light traveling west on Sunset. The Taurus struck a black Chevrolet pickup with a male driver heading south on Westridge. In turn, the Chevrolet collided with a pest control company’s red Ford pickup carrying two men.

The sedan’s driver was taken on a stretcher to a Gold Cross Ambulance, sitting up and conscious, wearing a precautionary neck brace.

“She was walking,” Blackman said. “She didn’t seem to have major injuries.”

The front of the Taurus and the front of the Ford pickup were both smashed and each vehicle had to be towed. The Chevrolet — with damage to its front passenger side and rear driver’s side– was driven from the scene under its own power.

The scene was cleared by 4 p.m.
