Region 10 soccer: Thunder, Mustangs on collision course for crown

ST. GEORGE — Two teams sit atop the Region 10 soccer standings, and it doesn’t look like others can catch them.

Desert Hills (8-1) and defending 4A state champion Crimson Cliffs (7-1) are taking their battle for region supremacy down to the last two weeks of the regular season.

Crimson claimed the first match between these backyard neighbors 1-nil on March 31. The Mustangs only loss came at home against Cedar on April 6, also by a 1-nil score.

The Thunder and Mustangs rematch at Desert Hills on Tuesday, April 25.

Following are recaps of Region 10 soccer action this week.

Games April 14

Crimson Cliffs 4, Snow Canyon 1

The Mustangs scored four times in the first half to put Warriors away early.

Hinckley Heaton scored a goal and recorded an assist in the win. Senior Owen Klingonsmith scored twice for the Mustangs and Camden Squires netted the fourth marker for the winners.

Noah Nield picked up a point for Crimson with his assist.

Senior Will Warner netted the sole tally for Snow Canyon, which came late in the second half.

Desert Hills 2, Dixie 0

The Thunder shutout the Flyers at Dixie behind two goals from junior Karson Clark. Dawson Amick and Gage Lewis assisted Clark’s scores.

Senior goalkeeper Shayden Scott earned the shutout.

Pine View 3, Hurricane 2 (OT)

The Panthers pulled out the win with a goal in the first overtime session after the teams played to a 2-2 tie in regulation time.

The Tigers jumped ahead 1-nil on the road and scored again in the second half and Pine View responded with two late scores to force the extra time.

Christian Cruz scored twice for the Panthers. Freshman Russell Jones found the back of the net for the winners, while Kanyon Dickinson and Mizael Perezvera dispensed assists for the Panthers.

Games April 11

Snow Canyon 4, Cedar 0

At Cedar City, the Warriors picked up a shutout win over the Reds.

Will Nadauld got Snow Canyon on the board first with a shot midway through the first half.

A few minutes later, Brandon Gough found the back of the net to make it 2-0. Then, just before halftime, Will Warner scored to make it 3-0.

Gough scored again in the second half to account for the final margin, as goalkeeper Max Torres picked up the shutout.

“I’m happy that we were able to win,” said Snow Canyon head coach Zac Hales. “The boys played really well against a very good Cedar team. We were able to stay organized defensively and put away our chances going forward.”

Desert Hills 6, Pine View 3

The Thunder scored three times in each half to post the big win at home.

Dan Simister scored a hat trick in the Thunder’s win and finished with seven points after also dispensing an assist.

Netting single tallies in the Desert Hills win were Harry Echohawk, Gage Lewis and Isaac Poppe. Lewis recorded three assists and both Gage Jeppson and Jaxon Resendez  recorded single assists in the victory.

Dixie 3, Hurricane 0

The Flyers found the back of the net three times in the second half and posted a shutout victory over the Tigers.

Joe Pasley crossed to Hayes Thompson for Dixie’s first goal. Thompson assisted again on the second Dixie score, this one off the boot of Iker Meza.

Those two Flyers flip-flopped on the final marker as Meza assisted Thompson’s finish and Dixie controlled the rest of the contest.

Games Tuesday, April 18

Hurricane at Cedar, 4 p.m.; Snow Canyon at Dixie, 7:30 p.m.; Crimson Cliffs at Pine View, 7:30 p.m.
