CEDAR CITY — A driver walked away from the scene of a rollover crash after his tire blew out near mile marker 65 on Interstate 15 Tuesday afternoon.
The Utah Highway Patrol received the call at approximately 3:07 p.m. A silver Toyota Corolla was traveling northbound when its rear, driver’s side tire blew out, causing it to veer off the road and roll over, UHP Sgt. Bambi Baie said.
Baie said the crash was caused by “equipment failure,” adding that the Corolla’s other tires were in good condition. She was uncertain what caused the blowout but said the driver might have run over something on the freeway.
The driver declined medical care and reportedly was uninjured. Baie said he was driving the speed limit and wearing his seat belt. No property damage or other injuries were reported and the freeway remained open.
To prevent similar crashes, Baie said to check and maintain equipment regularly, adding that drivers who experience tire blowouts should reduce speed slowly and avoid slamming on the vehicle’s brakes.
Gold Cross Ambulance, the Cedar City Fire Department and Cedar City Police also responded to the scene.
This report is based on statements from police, emergency personnel or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
