The crash, which involved a white 2015 Jeep Latitude, reportedly happened shortly after 8 a.m. on southbound I-15 near the Parowan exit at mile marker 78.
Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Bambi Baie said the vehicle first went off the road to the left, upon which the driver overcorrected to the right side of the roadway. The Jeep then crashed into the sloping concrete ramp beneath the overpass and rolled at least once before coming to rest on its side on a small grassy berm just off the right shoulder.
None of the three occupants was wearing a seat belt, Baie told Cedar City News at the scene.
“The driver was ejected,” she said. “The other two were also not wearing seatbelts but they were not ejected. All three have been transported.”
The adult male driver was first taken by ground ambulance to Parowan’s airport, after which he was flown to St. George Regional Hospital via an Intermountain Life Flight helicopter. His injuries were described as serious.
The other two occupants, both of whom were also adults, were taken via ground ambulance to Cedar City Hospital for evaluation and treatment. They had unspecified injuries that were thought to be minor, Baie said.
Baie added that the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
“We do know they were headed from Colorado and they had been driving all night,” she said. “So I don’t know if fatigue played a role.”
Impairment is also being looked at as a possible factor, Baie added.
The vehicle sustained significant damage and needed to be towed.
Traffic impact was minimal, as the wrecked Jeep came to rest far enough away from the roadway that it wasn’t blocking the flow of traffic.
