ST. GEORGE — The city of St. George has been awarded a $10 million low-interest loan for a multistory parking structure that is to be built next to the new city hall.
Projected to be four levels and host over 300 parking stalls, the new parking structure will join the one on Tabernacle Street and another currently being built on 200 East by the new Washington County Administrative Building.
Like the current and incoming parking structures, the new one is touted as a way to help alleviate parking needs in the downtown area.
According to a press release, the low-interest loan is being provided by the Permanent Community Impact Board (CIB), which awards grants and low-interest loans to cities, towns and counties from funds directed to the CIB from mining and oil and gas extraction on federal land.
“This parking structure will not only complement the upcoming construction of the new city hall but also exemplify the commitment of the Permanent Community Impact Board to empowering Utah communities by offering grants and low-interest loans,” Jerry Taylor, board member and Garfield County commissioner, said in the press release.
“We take great pride in fostering the development of enduring spaces that will cater to the needs of generations to come,” he said.
The new St. George Hall is set to be built on Main Street, directly across from the St. George Town Square. The new parking structure would be built directly east of it. These, along with related projects connected to the original city hall, are anticipated to run the city a combined $41.5 million, according to the city’s proposed 2024 budget.
The St. George City Council was given a preview of what the new city hall and accompanying parking structure will likely look like during a work meeting last December.
