ST. GEORGE — Outdoor enthusiasts wanting to enjoy the peace and solitude of Pine Valley have less than one month before construction crews invade the area.

Over the last year, engineers have been monitoring the Pine Valley campground and recreation area roads for damage and preventative maintenance.

Officials recently issued a press release after conducting assessments of the popular mountain retreat in the Dixie National Forest. Due to engineers discovering numerous portions of road and trail pavement in need of replacement, the area will be closed for upgrades.

The campground and recreation area will be closed on Sept. 10 and reopen Nov. 30. Due to the large road work project, staff said the recreational area’s closure will allow construction crews time and space to complete projects in an efficient, timely and safe manner.

“The purpose of the road project is to prevent and reduce road damage,” Dixie National Forest Service Public Affairs Specialist Jenny Plecki said. “Road work will involve crack sealing, asphalt repairs, chip seal with a seal coat, new shouldering, removal of specific wheel stops, curb stop installation and pavement striping and markings.”

The Pine Valley Recreation Area and campground will be closed completely for the duration of the temporary closure, for public and construction crew safety purposes.

“Please respect closure signs and road contractors until the area is open to the public again,” Plecki added. “During construction, we recommend camping and recreating at our other dispersed sites and locations throughout the forest.”

The Dixie National Forest said in the press release that their employees appreciate the patience and understanding of the community during maintenance. The following campgrounds will be undergoing road projects:

  • Forsyth Group Area
  • Dean Gardner Campground
  • Pine Valley Summer Homes (Forest Service Road 30336)
