Led by senior Brock Porter’s 4-under score of 68, the Thunder had four of the top seven scores of the afternoon. Crew Christensen shot a 71, Westin Andelin shot a 72 and Andre Rosales had a 73 to give Desert Hills a team score of 284. That was 16 strokes ahead of second-place Crimson Cliffs, which finished at 300.

Although Crimson Cliffs, the defending state champions, lost last season’s top two golfers Boston Bracken and Lincoln Markham to graduation, the Mustangs still did see two players shoot under par on Thursday, as Dylan Winona and Jarren Phillips each finished at 70.

“There are some talented golfers in our region this year,” said Desert Hills coach Ron Denos. “It will be a battle every week. It will be a fun year.”

Next week’s Region 9 match is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 22 at SunRiver Golf Club in St. George.
