ST. GEORGE — A lightning strike set the attic of a St. George home ablaze Saturday afternoon.
St. George Fire Department Battalion Chief Robert Hooper told St. George News that four engines and about 20 firefighting personnel responded to a report of a lightning strike at 1410 West 540 North shortly after 5 p.m.
“The homeowners were not home, the neighbors called it in,” Hooper said. “They reported smoke and flames coming from the attic.”
Hooper said that crews put out the fire pretty quickly.
“It took about 20 minutes to put the fire out,” he said. “It spread a little bit into the attic and caused some property damage.”
Hooper said there were no injuries to humans or pets.
Both ends of the block were closed to traffic while firefighters attacked the fire, which blackened the roof and attic of the house.
Firefighters climbed a ladder to gain access from above, while others entered the home from below through the garage.
St. George News arrived on scene shortly after 6 p.m. as the last of the smoldering embers in the attic were doused.
A neighbor who lives across the street from the scene said that while he did not see the lightning strike, he “sure heard it.”
“It woke me up,” the neighbor told St. George News. “It shook the building.”
This report is based on statements by first responders and eye witnesses and may not include the full scope of the investigation.
