ST. GEORGE — Traffic on northbound Interstate 15 was briefly reduced to a single lane north of the Washington Parkway/Exit 13 interchange Monday afternoon as first responders tended to a vehicle fire.
The vehicle fire, which involved a large truck, was reported around 1:30 p.m. in the area of mile marker 14 on northbound I-15. While the truck was able to get off the roadway, responding units from the Washington City Fire Department and Utah Department of Transportation closed the lane closest to the vehicle fire so they had room to operate safely, according to a Facebook post by the fire department.
A single lane remained open as the vehicle fire was dealt with. No injuries were reported and the fire was contained to the truck.
The lack of nearby fire hydrants presented a challenge to firefighters originally, according to the post, but they gained an adequate water supply with the arrival of a “tender.” Also known as water tenders, these vehicles are designed to transport large quantities of water to the scene of a fire, especially in areas where a reliable water source, like fire hydrants or natural bodies of water, may not be readily available.
In addition to the tender – designated “Tender 46,” also responding from the Washington City Fire Department were Ladder 64, Engine 61 and Engine 52, along with their associated fire crews, the department states.
