‘Good timing’: Man films boulder fall at Toquerville Bypass construction site

ST. GEORGE — A rock reportedly the size of a small truck fell Thursday afternoon at the construction site of the entry to the Toquerville Bypass, and a LaVerkin resident was able to capture the moment on video.

The rockfall occurred around 3:40 p.m. at the LaVerkin entry to the under-construction Toquerville Bypass, a new roadway expected to open at the end of the year designed to divert park-bound traffic away from central Toquerville.

Washington County Sheriff’s deputies said as it is a construction area closed to traffic anyway, there are no closures, and there were no injuries.

LaVerkin resident Tom Bennett filmed the exact moment that the rocks and boulder about the size of a small truck came down. A couple of smaller rocks are seen initially coming down, followed by a few more about 30 seconds later. Another half minute after that, another cascade of sand and rock begins to fall, followed by the boulder breaking free from the side of the cliff to Bennett’s audible “Whoa” on the video that was later posted to TikTok.

“It was good timing,” Bennett said.

Sgt. Lucas Alfred with the Sheriff’s Office said law enforcement is not involved.

“It’s not an open road yet and an active construction site,” he said.

It’s unclear what exactly caused the rockfall. St. George News was unable to reach JP Excavation, the construction firm building the road.

As of Friday morning, the boulder remained on the under-construction road.
