Clyde Wayne Stephenson

Aug. 7, 1938-May 6, 2024

Clyde Wayne Stephenson passed away on May 6, 2024, in St. George, Utah, in the arms of his wife Carla Stephenson. He was born Aug. 7, 1938, in Melrose, New Mexico, to Hughie Clyde “Bud” Stephenson and Eva Roberta Townley.

Clyde and Carla were happily married for 41 years.

Clyde retired as a senior chief in the Navy SeaBees after 32 years of service in both the Army and Navy Reserves. He loved his years in the military and was every bit the senior chief in every aspect of his life.

He was an ironworker foreman at U.S. Steel and Geneva Steel and retired after 20 years. He was a proud member of the Chickasaw Nation and treasured that heritage.

Clyde was born in New Mexico and his family moved to Provo, Utah, when he was 15. He loved being in nature and spent several years hunting and camping all over the west, but his favorite place in the world was the Delores Triangle on the Utah/Colorado border. He had a special place there where for over 50 years he enjoyed teaching his son Chad, grandchildren Dustin, Brooke and Tasheena and nephew Reese about the joys of the outdoors.

He said, “I prefer the far, far away, the obscure and difficult trail leading into the unknown to any paved highway and the deep peace of the wild to the discontent bred by the cities.”

Clyde is survived by his wife Carla; his granddaughters Coty Clark, Brooke (Tommy) Craddock and Tasheena Stephenson; great-grandchildren Skylee, T.J., Gianni, Ciella, Amethyst, Hugo and Luke. He is also survived by his nephew Maurice Estioko, with whom he shared a very special bond; and many other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Chad Stephenson; daughters Robin Clark and Heather Stephenson; grandson Dustin; his parents; brother  Don; and sister Imogene.

Clyde was the center of his family. He will be deeply missed and there will always be “Clydee” stories told. We will hold him in our hearts forever and remember him as the proud, honorable and loving man he was.
