The incident left several passengers injured, including three children.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to a rollover crash late Sunday on northbound I-15 near mile maker 30, just north of Toquerville involving a Toyota Sequoia and a Land Rover. Intermountain Life Flight was launched from St. George due to the severity of the crash.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Cameron Roden said the driver of the Sequoia was critically injured after he was struck by an oncoming vehicle heading north on I-15. He was then flown to St. George Regional Hospital in critical condition. Four other occupants in the Sequoia were ground transported to the same hospital by ambulance, including three children, all of whom suffered moderate to serious injuries.

The four occupants in the Land Rover suffered no serious injuries in the crash, Roden added.

At the time of the incident, the Sequoia was heading south on I-15 when the SUV struck a deer that had run in front of the vehicle. The impact sent the SUV swerving to the left across the roadway where it rolled multiple times, crossing the median as it did so.

The SUV came to rest partially blocking one of the northbound lanes of travel, which is when the driver got out of the SUV and was struck by the Land Rover as it headed north, Roden said. The driver of the Land Rover pulled over immediately after the crash and remained at the scene. The four adult occupants sustained minor injuries and were not transported to the hospital.

The northbound side of I-15 was closed for approximately four hours to allow troopers to conduct a crash investigation and for responders to tend to the scene. Traffic was diverted off the interstate at the Pintura exit. Just after 4 a.m., the scene was cleared and both northbound lanes were reopened for travel.

Roden said the driver of the Sequoia is expected to survive his injuries.

The Utah Highway Patrol, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Hurricane Valley Fire District and Utah Department of Transportation’s Incident Management Team responded to the scene. This report is based on statements from police, emergency personnel or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
