Luena Diane Carter Howell Francom was born in Levan, Utah, to Gerald Holman and Zella Stephensen Carter on Oct. 3, 1933. She graduated peacefully from this earthly life at her home Feb. 21, 2024. Luena was raised in Levan, Utah, where she was the second of nine children. She learned the value of hard work as she helped with younger siblings and tended the family garden with her father. Some of her fondest memories were made spending summers in St. George with her aunt. Luena graduated from Juab High School and attended Dixie State College where she was chosen to be a cheerleader.

On May 1, 1954, she married Evan LaMar Howell. Their marriage was later solemnized on Dec. 12, 1970, in the Manti Temple. Together they raised three children. Luena was always busy. She found employment in many areas but ended her working career as the Housing Financial Services Manager at BYU. After retirement, she and Evan served as senior missionaries in the Ohio Cleveland Mission for their church. Luena always found time for her family, enjoying camping, hunting, fishing, traveling and golfing. She will be remembered for her love of gardening which was evident in her beautiful yard and bountiful harvests, which she shared freely.

After Evan’s death on Feb. 27, 2003, Luena married her second love Lynn Francom on May 15, 2004, in the Mount Timpanogos Temple. They enjoyed 14 beautiful years together the highlight being their mission to Suva, Fiji. Together they blended a family of nearly 50 grandchildren and almost 100 great-grandchildren which has continued to multiply. Lynn’s children and grandchildren became her children and grandchildren along with their spouses. Lynn passed away May 13, 2018.

Luena’s commitment to serving others was evident in her many church callings, which included, Primary teacher, Gospel Doctrine teacher, YW president and Ward and Stake Relief Society presidencies. Her testimony and love of the Savior brought light and meaning to her amazing life, where service to others was always a priority. She enjoyed playing golf with the Oak’s Ladies Golf Association where she served in leadership roles and won numerous medals in the Senior Games. Luena made friends wherever she went with her quick smile, infectious laugh and genuine good nature. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
