Life is simpler in Apple Valley, where fresh air invigorates and starry skies captivate. At Wells Estates, homeowners enjoy the serenity of countryside living while being just 10 miles away from the conveniences of the greater St. George area.

“Take the drive up here,” developer Libby Wells said. “It’s worth it.”

Wells and her husband, Travis, the owners of Wells Custom Construction, relocated to Southern Utah from Idaho in 2007. They specialize in custom properties, both residential and commercial, and have built many luxury condos and homes in the ski resort areas of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Big Sky, Montana.

The couple all but retired upon moving south, although they occasionally built custom homes and also did some work for the city of St. George. A few years ago, they decided St. George was becoming a bit too busy for their liking and purchased land in Apple Valley.

Wells Estates is a 25-lot subdivision offering generous acreage and extraordinary views. Lot sizes start at 1.25 acres and span as much as 2.8 acres, allowing buyers to build the high-end custom home of their dreams while having plenty of room to play.

Residents can ride their horses or offroad vehicles through town and access popular recreation areas like Coral Pink Sand Dunes and Sand Hollow without needing a trailer. Plus, mountain biking trails are everywhere. The world-famous Gooseberry Mesa is practically in your backyard.

Lots are ready for building, Wells said. The roads are paved, utilities and fiber optic internet have been installed, and a log and iron fence surrounds the entire community.

Construction is almost finished on a spec home that will set the standard for building in Wells Estates. Located at 630 W. Daybreak Mesa Drive, the property encompasses four bedrooms, five bathrooms and 4,400 square feet of living space plus an additional 4,000 square feet of storage, including an RV garage.

Stunning architectural woodwork throughout lends a classic Western feel to the interior. In fact, Wells said the woodwork took longer to complete than the framing of the entire home.

“It’s all 2-by-6,” she added. “We went big on insulation, we went above and beyond on everything.”

The exterior features rustic wood and rock siding reminiscent of the homes one might find in Park City, Jackson Hole or Big Sky. Inspired by the surrounding mountains, this architectural style represents a welcome departure from the desert and farmhouse designs popular among builders throughout the St. George area.

“It’s not your average Southern Utah home,” Wells said. “Our mountain-style homes are harmonious with this unique area.”

Wells and her husband have already started building another home in the community that will become their own full-time residence. About half of the lots have already sold, and plans for a third home are currently in the engineering phase.
