This designation applies specifically to the dedicated memory care “neighborhood” within Primrose Retirement Community of Washington, which is committed to serving individuals grappling with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related conditions. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1 in 9 people aged 65 and older is living with Alzheimer’s.

The Silver Lace neighborhood by Primrose boasts a distinctive floor plan, providing residents with ample space for walking and engaging in various purpose-built rooms that facilitate a range of activities. Outside, a meticulously landscaped courtyard awaits, encouraging residents to immerse themselves in nature and partake in gardening through the community’s raised gardening boxes.

Designed with the unique needs of those with memory loss in mind, the neighborhood incorporates dementia-supportive features such as nighttime wayfinding lights and a single-door design to empower residents in confidently navigating their living spaces. Each apartment’s exterior features shadowboxes filled with mementos reflecting residents’ life stories, aiding in consistent apartment location and offering opportunities for reminiscence.

The Silver Lace neighborhood further enhances the daily lives of residents through enriching activities and structured dining experiences while balancing certainty, structure and choice. The entire neighborhood is bathed in natural light from expansive skylights, potentially contributing to improved mood, reduced afternoon energy fluctuations (commonly known as “sundowning”) and support for healthy sleep patterns.

Guiding the Silver Lace neighborhood is a devoted director of memory care, supported by a team of community leaders dedicated to delivering exceptional services to residents and their families. This team ensures that Primrose of Washington’s mission-driven staff is well-prepared and equipped with the necessary education and resources to empower residents throughout their memory care journey.

Additionally, the Silver Lace neighborhood benefits from the expertise of Primrose’s regional and home office team members, all holding national certifications as certified dementia practitioners. This certification opportunity will soon be extended to the leadership team at Primrose of Washington, with ongoing educational resources in place for frontline care team members.

“We love this place. Mom has thrived during her time here,” said Eric Scheible, the son of a Primrose of Washington resident. “The nursing team is fabulous; they’re the whole reason we are here. Primrose checks all the boxes for my mom.”

“Every chance I have, I am so excited to show off our memory care! I believe that our Primrose Silver Lace Memory Care neighborhood has the best spatial design and programming that I have been involved with in over my 30 years in this industry,” Primrose of Washington executive director Dana Talbot said.

“The skylights give the neighborhood an open and inviting feel,” Talbot added. “The dining area and activity spaces provide well-thought-out areas to allow comfort and purpose. Our caring staff become a special part of our residents’ lives as well as their family’s lives.”
