Possible medical issue may be cause behind ‘slow-moving impact’ in Santa Clara

ST. GEORGE — A potential medical episode may be the cause of a single-vehicle crash involving a Dodge SUV and a chain-link fence post on Crestview Drive in Santa Clara Monday afternoon.

The incident was reported around 3:30 p.m. on the corner of Crestview and Lava Ridge drives. When police and other responders arrived at the scene, they found a white Dodge Journey SUV that had veered off the road and smacked into a corner fence post.

While the fence post left dents on the fender and hood of the SUV, there didn’t appear to be any other visible damage. Overall property damage appeared to be minor.

As for the driver, Santa Clara-Ivins Police Lt. Jaron Studely said it appeared the woman who had been driving the SUV either passed out or had a medical incident of some kind that resulted in her veering off the road a having a “slow-moving collision” with the corner fence post. The exact cause of the collision has not been verified.

The speed limit in that residential part of Santa Clara is typically 25 mph.

The woman appeared to be awake and alert when she was taken by Gold Cross Ambulance to St. George Regional Hospital, Studley said. A juvenile who had also been in the SUV when it hit the fence post was picked up by family members following the crash, he added.

The scene was cleared around 4:45 p.m. when a tow truck removed the SUV.
