ST. GEORGE — Get the umbrellas out for the next few days.
Multiple bands of rain are expected to come through the area starting Wednesday night into Thursday. And after a Friday respite, expect more rain through the weekend.
It will be a typical rainstorm, according to the National Weather Service, with no storm watches as of now.
But a spokesperson with the weather service’s Salt Lake City office told St. George News in a statement that Wednesday night won’t necessarily be a quiet storm.
“The rain that is expected tonight into Thursday morning has a slight chance for a rumble of thunder,” they said, adding it will be a “relatively short-lived event.”
There is an 80% chance of rain for the St. George, Hurricane and Cedar City areas Wednesday night, the weather service said.
The storms Wednesday night and those over the weekend shouldn’t be cold enough to develop into snow in Cedar City, but there is a forecast for the more frozen variety of precipitation in nearby Parowan and the higher elevations — that includes the Brian Head Ski Resort, which is opening for the season on Friday after a week delay.
The weather service told St. George News that the rain Saturday and Sunday will be a more significant event.
“Rain is expected to arrive Saturday morning with periods of heavy rain throughout the day,” the spokesperson with the Salt Lake City office said. “Isolated showers are still forecast for Sunday but the more impactful day this weekend will be Saturday. It does look like a rain event for both areas once again.”
The stormy weekend is just a taste of what is expected to be a wet winter in Southern Utah thanks to El Nino.
