ST. GEORGE — Two children died and one man remains in the intensive care unit following a Sunday evening crash.
At approximately 5:18, the St. George Police Department received a report of a black sedan that crashed into a power pole near 575 North Dixie Drive, St. George Police Officer Tiffany Mitchell wrote in a news release on Facebook.
Witnesses and passersby reportedly “immediately took action,” breaking windows to get the two injured children out of the back seat.
“The children were not breathing when they were removed from the car,” Mitchell wrote. “These heroic individuals began lifesaving measures on the children. The two male children, ages 4 and 9, tragically died from their injuries.”
Their 36-year-old father, who was driving the vehicle, was transported to the hospital with critical injuries and is in the ICU, Mitchell said.
“We mourn the loss of these two young children in such a tragic accident and we offer our condolences to the family, first responders, witnesses and hospital staff,” she wrote. “Those who assisted made every effort to provide lifesaving measures to both young boys, and we appreciate those efforts.”
The St. George Accident Reconstruction Team, with specialized members from surrounding agencies, was dispatched to the scene to investigate.
While speed and impairment appear to be “major contributing factors” in the incident, Mitchell said additional details concerning the crash or potential charges would not be released until their work is complete.
The police requested witnesses to the crash who have not already spoken with investigators to call 435-627-4300 in an earlier Facebook post.
