BEAVER DAM, Ariz. — Friday night, a high-impact collision on Interstate 15 southbound, just north of the Virgin River Bridge, resulted in three people being transported to the hospital.

Beaver Dam/Littlefield Fire Assistant Chief Andres Ojeda said the collision occurred at 9:45 p.m. (MDT) after an adult man driving a Volkswagon sedan failed to slow down when entering the construction zone and hit a charcoal grey Subaru SUV carrying four adult women.

Ojeda said the collision occurred at milepost 10.8 on the southbound lanes, where the speed limit slows down from 55 mph to 45 mph. The Subaru slowed down to the speed limit. The Volkswagon driver was not paying attention and ran into the rear of the Subaru.

“Thank goodness they (Subaru) were moving,” Ojeda said. “If they were stopped and with that freeway speed, it would have been really bad.”

The Volkswagon driver was transported to St. George Regional Hospital with moderate injuries. The two women in the back seat of the Subaru were transported with minor whiplash injuries. The two women in the front seat declined medical transport.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene due to extensive damage. Traffic was minimally affected as both drivers pulled their vehicles off on the shoulder of the freeway. Beaver Dam/Littlefield Fire and Rescue, Arizona Highway Patrol and Mohave County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

Ojeda said it is pertinent that when entering construction zones, drivers must slow down and obey all traffic laws.

“Slow down and pay attention fully,” Ojeda said. “Construction zones have more traffic restrictions for a reason. That reason is for the safety of yourself and others.”

This report is based on statements from police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
