BEAVER COUNTY — A wreck on Interstate 15 near Cove Fort caused the complete closure of southbound lanes just north of the exit to Interstate 70 for over an hour and a half.

The lanes were closed at approximately 5:50 p.m. after a semitractor-trailer left the roadway and crashed near mile marker 132, Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Clay Allred told St. George News.

The semi’s driver was in critical condition and airlifted to Utah Valley Hospital in Provo. Allred said it was not apparent why the driver went off the road.

Because of the scene’s position when they shut down the freeway for the helicopter to land, some travelers got stuck between the crash and the exit.

“Once we got some more units here, we were able to start pushing traffic off the Cove Fort exit,” Allred said.

Travelers were rerouted through Cove Fort and to the junction overpass to continue southbound on I-15. The lanes were reopened at about 7:30 p.m.

This report is based on statements from police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
