Car collides with ambulance passing through Riverside Drive intersection

ST. GEORGE — A collision involving a car and ambulance in a St. George intersection during the onset of rush-hour traffic had the road backed up for at least 30 minutes Monday evening.

Just after 5 p.m., the crew of a Gold Cross Ambulance was responding to an emergency call with its lights and sirens going when it crossed into the intersection of Mall Drive and Riverside Drive, St. George Police Officer Bryan Hendrix told St. George News.

The ambulance had to enter the intersection from the side of oncoming traffic and was subsequently T-boned — a northbound Chevrolet Cruze LT crashed into its passenger side from the direction of Mall Drive.

The Chevrolet’s driver told responding police officers she had the green light when entering the intersection, Hendrix said. However, that part of the incident is still being investigated to determine whether or not she ran a red light or if the ambulance driver failed to yield to oncoming traffic.

The crash halted traffic on all sides of the intersection for over 30 minutes as responders dealt with the scene and cleaned up debris. Police officers had to direct traffic through the intersection as the scene was gradually cleared.

The Chevrolet and ambulance were moved to the roadside and ultimately towed away.

The Chevrolet’s driver received some minor lacerations and burns from the air bags deploying in her car, while one of the ambulance medics complained of neck pain following the collision; other than that, there were no major injuries, Hendrix said.

Traffic flow through the intersection normalized around 5:45 p.m.
