At approximately 12:40 p.m., 14 people were traveling south in a Ford Van on state Route 89 near mile marker 83 between Orderville and Mount Carmel Junction, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Cameron Roden told St. George News.
Several witnesses told UHP the van crossed the centerline, hitting a northbound semitractor-trailer that was pulling double belly dumps. Following the initial impact, the van was struck by a southbound Hyundai Elantra.
Three of the van’s occupants in critical condition were transported to the hospital via helicopter, and the other 11 were transported via ambulance. Several individuals in the van reportedly were not wearing seat belts.
The Hyundai driver had minor injuries and was transported to the hospital by ambulance. The semi driver was not transported, Roden said.
UHP doesn’t suspect impairment as the cause of the crash, he added.
This report is based on preliminary statements from law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.
