Keep spirits up: Snow Canyon High club launches costume drive to help more kids enjoy Halloween

ST. GEORGE — A Snow Canyon High School club is running a costume drive to keep spirits up on Halloween by ensuring more kids have the means to dress up this ghostly holiday.

Cynthia Vo, who serves as the vice president for Latinos in Action, said this is the first time they are doing this service-oriented project. They had the idea last year, but due to other projects, they didn’t have time to put it into action, she said. But this year is different.

“I was thinking last year of what we could do in October to give back to the community and because we weren’t able to execute it last year, this year we really got all hands-on about it,” Vo said.

The Latinos in Action Costume Drive starts Monday, Oct. 2, to collect costumes for kids at two elementary schools near Snow Canyon High: Arrowhead Elementary and Paradise Canyon Elementary.

Donation bins will be set up at Snow Canyon High School at 1385 Lava Flow Drive in St. George. People may donate new or used costumes and accessories. Costumes then will be delivered to kids who are unable to afford one.

“All donations need to be received by the end of school on the 20th,” Vo said. “That gives us time to go through them and get them dispersed to schools and kids.”

She said all donations need to be proper for elementary kids, which means no promiscuous costumes and no costumes with any satanic insignia.

She added they need sizes of all types as elementary kids range in sizes as well.

Flyers about the drive have been hung up all around local places such as cafes, gyms, yoga studios, Halloween stores and more.

The Latinos in Action is well known for being service-oriented by performing several charitable projects that benefit the community. These include Make-a-Wish fulfillment, food drives for the local food banks, essentials drives for the homeless and several for lower-income elementary students.

The club also participates in raising cultural awareness at festivals and community events, such as Juan Fest.

The club is open to all ethnicities. Vo, herself, is Vietnamese and loves the club for its service opportunities to the community.

Anyone with questions may contact Snow Canyon High School during school hours by calling 435-634-1967 or by emailing Vo.
