Crews from the city and the Utah Department of Transportation worked to clear the debris that was blocking traffic, according to Lt. Shawn Judd with the Utah Highway Patrol.

“Main Street is closed due to water,” Judd told St. George News. “Unconfirmed reports of a few houses that flooded in Kanab.”

UDOT crews were reporting the street was expected to be open by 6:30 p.m.

A Facebook post by the city of Kanab said the following around 7 p.m.: “Thank you to all those out doing service for your neighbors today. The community members who are filling sandbags, shoveling driveways, and pumping water out of their neighbors home are evidence of how awesome it is to live in Kanab.”

In an unrelated incident, a utility truck rolled on state Route 14 in Kane County just after 2 p.m.

Judd stated the incident involving a single vehicle occurred near milepost 28 and traffic was reduced to one lane as crews worked to clear the scene.

“The driver was not transported by medical,” he said. “The road was closed for a few minutes while the vehicle was recovered.”

The weather service reminds Southern Utah residents of the following during recent storms:

  • Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. Turn around — don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
  • Remain alert for flooding even in locations not receiving rain. Dry washes, streams, and rivers can become raging killer currents in a matter of minutes, even from distant rainfall.
  • Flooding is occurring or is imminent. It is important to know where you are relative to streams, rivers, or creeks which can become killers in heavy rains. Campers and hikers should avoid streams or creeks.
  • If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm and may lead to localized flooding.
