Truck takes out 2 street signs before smashing into St. George home

ST. GEORGE — After slamming into a residential home on Sunday afternoon, a man crawled out of a sideways truck to safety — but not before causing a stir in the neighborhood.

“I just heard a screech and then a bang,” neighbor Mac McGee said. “So I knew instantly what it was, and came outside to see where it was, then I saw the truck on its side.”

McGee said his wife called to report the crash, while he and another man rushed to assist the driver. He said they were able to open the truck door and the driver crawled out on his own. While standing on the truck box, McGee said he slipped and cut his arm open.

“So I hurt myself more than he got hurt,” he said, chuckling. “But I’m glad he’s OK.”

St. George Police Department Officer Tiffany Mitchell told St. George News they received a call at approximately 1 p.m. that a truck had crashed into a home on South 490 West.

Just before crashing into the home, the driver was coming around the corner and reached down to grab something, Mitchell said. The driver proceeded to hit two stop signs, and ultimately, a house. The driver was the only occupant in the vehicle at the time of the crash and sustained minor injuries.

The St. George Police Department and St. George Fire Department responded to the scene. McGee said the homeowner was not home at the time of the crash, but his wife notified the homeowner of the incident.

“Everybody in this neighborhood knows everybody,” Mack McGee said. “So we take care of each other.”

Neighbors watched as the tow truck pulled the sideways truck back to an upright position before hauling it away.

Mitchell said it’s important that drivers look at their own driving, take responsibility for making better choices behind the wheel and be hyper-focused on what’s happening around them. The deadliest crashes are the result of failure to yield, speed, distracted or impaired driving, reckless or aggressive driving and following too closely, she said.

“We can complain all day, but change starts with you – the driver,” Mitchell said.

This report is based on statements from police and may not contain the full scope of findings.
