Motorcycle, Mazda collide on Red Cliffs Drive near Megaplex

ST. GEORGE — A motorcyclist was alert but had to be transported to the hospital after the Harley-Davidson chopper he was riding crashed into the side of a Mazda sedan at the corner of Red Cliffs Drive and 2450 East early Wednesday afternoon.

The crash occurred just before 1 p.m. and forced the closure of a half block of eastbound Red Cliffs for approximately 45 minutes. Cars traveling east were able to detour through the Megaplex Theaters parking lot, while vehicles traveling north on 2450 East could access Red Cliffs through the Deseret Industries lot.

The incident is under investigation, but St. George Police officer Zachary Muckenthaler said the driver of a dark blue Mazda3 was making a left turn from Red Cliffs to 2450 East.

“He stated that he was trying to get out of the intersection,” Muckenthaler said of the Mazda driver. “He said he never saw the motorcycle or the motorcycle came fast.”

The passenger side of the Mazda was smashed, and its side airbags deployed. The motorcycle lay on its side, dented with drips of fuel leaking onto retardant laid out by the St. George Fire Department.

Muckenthaler said the motorcycle rider was alert and responding as he was taken into the ambulance. The male driver of the Mazda, its only passenger, was uninjured.

This report is based on information provided by law enforcement and may not contain the full scope of findings.
