ST. GEORGE — Week 4 of the high school football season is Week 1 of the Region 9 head-to-head schedule for six of the seven Southern Utah teams.

Three intriguing region matchups are set for 7 p.m. Friday:

  • Desert Hills (1-2) at Pine View (2-1)
  • Hurricane (1-2) at Dixie (0-3)
  • Crimson Cliffs (2-1) at Cedar (1-2)

Snow Canyon (2-1), meanwhile, will host Las Vegas’ Centennial (2-0) in non-region action, also at 7 p.m. Friday.

It’s easy to look at this one and think, “Hmm, great defense vs. great offense.” But they have played preseason games against different competition and now it matters in Region 9 play.

It will be interesting to see if Pine View’s Adam Moore, who leads the nation in passing with 1,228 yards in three games, can stay hot. He has weapons that will give the Thunder some issues, namely tight end Brock Harris who has offers from National Champions like Georgia and Alabama, as well as the Ford Performance Player of the Month Quincy Jones, who leads the entire state in receiving yards (569).

Thunder signal-caller Beau Wall returned after missing seven quarters, and Desert Hills needs him to light up the scoreboard if this one ends up being a shootout. If the defending champs want back-to-back wins and their first region win, Tytan Mason will need to carry the ball at least 25 times. Ball control offense will slow down the Panther offense in the Fan Sports network game of the week.

And the edge goes to … Desert Hills, according to one prep sports media outlet.

Hurricane at Dixie

The host Flyers are still searching for the starting QB, but so far Wyatt Truman looks like he’s been the better passer. Coach Blaine Monkres could use them both again this week but the way Truman rallied the team to make things interesting in the 24-21 loss to Park City is hard to ignore. Dixie’s Ran Sawyer is a star in the making and Jaxon Barben is a guy the Tigers will have to slow down.

For the Tigers, QB LJ Langston is playing lights-out, and Ethan Staples is a staple in the run game. But if Hurricane is going to pull off the upset, it will have to win in the trenches and the turnover department.

Crimson Cliffs at Cedar

The cross-town rivalry loss to Canyon View can’t linger for the Reds. They have the Mustangs and will need to play flawlessly in all phases of the game. With Everett Kelling at QB, Devin Crenshaw, Jonathan Jeter and TreDyn Elliot, they have the talent to do so.

The Mustangs are coming off a quality win over Springville, which showed they can play bully ball with the front seven on defense against a bigger school. Keep an eye on Jace Sweeten who has three interceptions, and Mckay Wright who is averaging 13 tackles per game. If the Mustang D is stingy again this week, that could be all QB Steele Barben needs to get the ball to the Crimson playmakers.

Centennial at Snow Canyon

The host Warriors showcased the dual-threat ability of senior QB Talan Kelly with his arm last week he threw for 222 yards and four TDs and ran for over 100 more and a rushing TD. If he does that again and continues to make good reads and spread the ball around, Snow Canyon might hang 55 points on the Bulldogs.

On defense, Teagan Whitehead continues to be a force. Last week, he played outside linebacker and tallied four sacks.
