ST. GEORGE — A storm system dropping heavy rain on portions of Southern Utah, accompanied by wind, thunder and lightning, prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood warning for west central Kane County and east central Washington County.

At 5:18 p.m., Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across portions of Zion National Park, including Behunin Canyon, Spry Canyon and the Zion National Park Visitor Center, according to a National Weather Service news release. The system was expected to move into The Subway area.

The alert is in effect until 8:15 p.m.

Slot canyons, dry washes, creeks and streams in and around Springdale and Zion National Park are expected to be impacted.

The weather service also provided reminders for drivers who encounter flooding:

  • Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads.
  • Remain alert for flooding even in locations not receiving rain. Dry washes, streams, and rivers can become raging killer currents in a matter of minutes, even from distant rainfall.
  • Flooding is occurring or is imminent. It is important to know where you are relative to streams, rivers, or creeks which can become killers in heavy rains. Campers and hikers should avoid streams or creeks.
