As a leader in advanced retinal treatment and surgery, Retina Associates of Southern Utah has played a pivotal role in the establishment of the new St. George Surgical Center campus. This state-of-the-art facility, which started accepting patients only a few weeks ago, is where cutting-edge innovation meets compassionate care, where functional meets remarkable.

“The community’s growing and we’re growing, so we wanted a facility more up-to-date that still had all the offerings of our previous surgery center,” said Dr. Ken Lord, a board-certified ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal specialist and the founder of Retina Associates of Southern Utah. “Surgeons are going to love it, and patients are going to love it too.”

The community is invited to a grand opening event for the new location on Friday, June 16, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Guests can enjoy music and food while taking tours of the facility. St. George Surgical Center’s exceptional medical team, along with some local surgeons, will be on hand to welcome current and future patients and answer questions.

Nationally accredited and owned by physicians, St. George Surgical Center was founded in 1988 as Southern Utah’s first ambulatory surgical center. Their existing campus on South Bluff Street has facilitated life-changing care for thousands of local patients as well as medical travelers from across the United States and Canada who regularly visit to participate in their cash pay program. It will remain open and fully operational.

St. George Surgical Center currently offers options for over 450 surgical procedures in 16 surgical specialties, including eye care. The new 13,000-square-foot campus features four modern operating rooms equipped with the latest and best in surgical technology, while the overall design improves patient flow and safety.

“It’s quite a big undertaking in such an expensive construction environment,” Lord said. “We’re really proud of it and ready to operate there.”

Located directly beneath Retina Associates of Southern Utah within the Riverfront Medical Center, the new facility provides convenient access for Lord and his colleagues to address urgent eye care needs along with providing support to other surgeons.

“We do a lot of emergency surgeries, and we’re constantly taking care of complicated issues that require immediate attention,” he said. “For surgeons in the community and surgeons looking to come to St. George, this is the place.”

Retina Associates of Southern Utah is the area’s only full-time retina specialty provider. Alongside fellow ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal specialist Dr. Joshua Carlson and optometric physician Dr. Reed Gibb, Lord addresses a variety of conditions including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachments, surgical complications and uveitis, as well as ocular trauma and oncology.

A native of St. George, Lord recognized that his hometown needed dedicated specialists to meet the needs of its rapidly growing population and established the clinic 10 years ago. Retina care is a heavily tech-driven field of eye care, and Retina Associates of Southern Utah opened a new facility in the Riverfront Medical Center at the beginning of 2023 to better serve patients.

Retina Associates of Southern Utah is rooted in evidence-based medical practices focused on improving eye health and elevating patient quality of life. Many treatments, including injections and laser procedures, are performed in-office.

“We use the latest techniques, treatments and research,” he said. “If it’s available and being done somewhere, we’re doing it here.”
