WASHINGTON CITY — For the past two months, early warning signs of a major construction project have been visible between the exits at mile markers 10 and 13 on Interstate 15 in Washington County.
In March, the Utah Department of Transportation started construction on I-15 between Green Spring Drive and Washington Parkway in Washington City. The project will give travelers three lanes in which to travel between St. George Boulevard (Exit 8) and Hurricane (Exit 16) when completed.
Another main component of the project is a new interchange giving freeway travelers the option to exit onto Washington City’s Main Street at milepost 11.
Due to the bridge overhaul, Main Street in Washington will be closed between 400 North and Buena Vista Boulevard as early as Monday, May 8, said UDOT Communications Manager Kevin Kitchen
As heavy construction begins in the area, residents likely will hear noise from the project between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday-Friday, according to a news release.
Weekend and night work may also be performed as needed. And on I-15, commuters should pay close attention for occasional traffic shifts, detours, lane closures and traffic delays.
“Increased noise, dust and vibration can also be expected,” stated an email sent to St. George News, “and in Washington City, the closure of Main Street at I-15 for up to 14 months.”
UDOT has several options for residents to report noise complaints or issues related to the Exit 11/Main Street interchange project. Those with concerns can choose one of the following:
- Hotline — (385) 403-4300
- Email — [email protected]
- Website — udotinput.utah.gov/i15washington
“This project will improve safety and mobility throughout Washington County by providing additional connections from I-15 to the rapidly growing northeast areas of Washington (City) and the downtown area,” according to the UDOT website.
The project is slated to be completed by the summer of 2024, according to UDOT.
“Main St. will be closed for approximately 9 months” as UDOT crews finish laying road base in the southbound median and begin paving in the area, the Washington City website said.
