Washington City Public Works Director Blake Fonnesbeck told St. George News that a 10-inch water main beneath the road ruptured sometime around midnight Wednesday-Thursday.

“City employees detected the problem early on and prevented more damage by getting the water turned off quickly,” he said. “Our crews have been working very hard to get this main road back open.”

Nearly 300 feet of roadway needed to be repaired and two homes were without water for a “short period of time,” Fonnesbeck said.

The Washington City street department was nearly finished with repairs on the road at 5 p.m. Thursday. Fonnesbeck estimated crews should have the road open by midnight on Friday, April 28 — essentially finishing the task in less than 24 hours.

“Again, we have a very good crew,” he said. “Buena Vista Boulevard will definitely be open between Green Spring Drive and Main Street for Friday morning commuters.”

Frequent travelers should take note of another closure next week. Signs on Buena Vista Boulevard. warn drivers of another shutdown on May 6, 2023, for the Ironman 70.3 race. According to the event website:

“With one day of racing, road closures apply May 6. All times are approximate and subject to change. For questions and concerns, call the Ironman Helpline at 435-301-7428 or email us at [email protected],” race organizers posted.

To prevent event-related traffic impacts, event staff suggest adjusting travel plans to minimize traffic jams throughout the week of the race.

“Plan ahead and get errands completed on days prior to road closures,” the website states. “Plan your route to and from work. Expect delays when entering or leaving impacted neighborhoods. Reschedule regular deliveries; opt for delivery times other than Saturday. And always avoid crossing the race route — find alternative through routes.”
